Character.AI Chapter 11: what it means for you
What is known about the Character.AI bankruptcy as of October 2026, what may happen to your chats, and the three steps to protect your characters.
What happened
Character Technologies, the company behind Character.AI, filed for Chapter 11 in Delaware on 12 October 2026 to run a court-supervised sale. The service keeps operating during the process; a sale is expected around late November or early December, and the platform may be wound down if no workable bid emerges (KQED, Tom’s Guide).
What about your chats and characters
Reports say the company has not stated whether user chats are part of the assets for sale, and that its privacy policy allows information to be shared in a sale of assets (Straight Arrow News). Nobody outside the process knows what a buyer will keep. This page will be updated when the sale is decided.
